The Atlantic has a photo essay about the year 1986, and damn, is it ever making me feel old. I was a sophomore in college in 1986. :/

You’ve got about 10 years on me, but I still recognize everyone here and know some of the details. I was only 8-9, but my elementary honors/gifted classes were amazing about keeping us up on current events, from the labor conflicts in Britain to the relentless fool-pitying here in the US.

If it makes you feel any better, I was 3.
Ok, maybe that doesn’t make you feel better.

In 1986 I was only 6 I think that means I’m not old.

Graduated high school in 87. Yeah were getting there. Thank god I got to grow up without cell phones and the internet.

Did you have to put on your reading glasses to cut and paste those pictures into the draft post window? :3

I didn’t use my first computer until I was in grad school, and didn’t use the Internet until I started working on my doctorate. My kids sit glued to YouTube (when they’re allowed to use the computer). I would have been out riding my bike. Sigh.

No, but I do have to slide my glasses down to read, or look over the top of them at the Google map on my phone. Getting older sucks. Youth is wasted on the young.

You’re only as old as you feel. But the older you get, the more time you spend feeling old.

My father was a news junkie. Every night during dinner, we had the TV on, watching the local news and then John Chancellor (followed by Tom Brokaw). It made for a distinct lack of conversation at the dinner table, but I was probably one of the more informed kids in school. Maybe that helped stoke my interest in history (actually, I blame Barbara Tuchman for lighting that fire, or at least throwing gasoline on it).

You and I are only a couple of years apart, but I had my hands on computers well before you. I didn’t own one, but we had access to a computer lab replete with Apple IIc and IIe systems. When I went to college, there was a Mac lab in our dorm (advantage of living on the “honors” floor). I took a year off and managed to save enough to buy my first desktop (66mhz with Turbo!). I bought my first laptop to complete my analysis and write my dissertation.
We have the same issue at home with the kids. My son can hardly put down his phone (no phone service - glorified iPod) to get his chores done. If he were just listening to music, I could understand. But his eyes are glued to the screen so he can watch videos. I disabled Youtube, vimeo, etc. at the router just so he would focus on getting his homework done.

My wife is two years younger than I am, and she had much more exposure to computers in undergrad (we went to the same college). When I went to grad school in Houston, I worked at Kinko’s, and it was there that I started using a computer regularly. I didn’t own one of my own until the mid-90s.
I can’t understand why my boys would rather watch a video of somebody playing a video game rather than playing it themselves. We have banned phones/computers Sunday night through Thursday, though they still camp out in front of the TV after school, and when we get in the car the first words out of their mouth is, “Can I have your phone?” I have to remind myself that we likely would have been the same way if we had had the technology in our youth. But I think the screens are insidious, almost like crack for your eyes. When there is no computer, phone or TV, my kids simply don’t know what to do, so they wrestle. I need to work harder to encourage creative play and other creative endeavors.

Ain’t nothing to be afraid of. You’re not even half way. When you hit 50, as I will this November, you start to realize that you are beyond half way, that you have fewer years left than you have already lived. That’s where it gets scary. As a trumpet player, I’ve performed at more than a few funerals. And there’s always somebody who gets up and talks about how awesome the deceased was. As I approach 50, I start to wonder what someone will say about me. It’s sobering.

Wrestling is good! To be fair, most of the people our age were latchkey kids and camped out in front of the TV as soon as they got home from school. The difference today is most kids have cable in their room and anything/everything they would ever want to watch in the palms of their hands. Excessive access, especially unsupervised, is a bad thing.
My son does the same thing with the videos. They have affected his taste in the kinds of shows he wants to watch and the music he listens to. I set up our home router to record all traffic, block what I can (obvious porn sites, etc.), and restrict access after certain times of the day. It minimizes the arguing. Sorry kids, it’s the policy. If you need access to finish your homework or print something, just ask. Otherwise, it all goes off at 8:00.

Wrestling is good, but it usually turns into punching and slapping and kicking, which quickly turns ugly. I get that boys need to be physical, but I’d rather they go outside and kick the soccer ball.
We have multiple computers in the house, but they are all in the living room. Of course, as soon as my middle schooler carries his phone into his room, it becomes a computer in his room, and we need to keep an eye on it. They do not have TVs in their rooms. In fact, the 10-year-olds only sleep in their room. They spend all their time in the living room, and that’s okay, although a bit distracting at times. We’ve got a pretty small house for 5 people.

Look into a new router. It really helps to manage access across all devices even when they sneak into the other room with their phones. We are using Skydog right now, but with it shutting down soon, we will probably switch over to pcWRT .
How effective are they? My son was very surprised when I sat him down to talk about his searching for naked women on his phone. I could see from the search results, he wasn’t having much luck. :)

Those chrome-plated AKs, blasting away. But never hitting anything. That was the era when explosions were okay, as long as nobody died. That was also the era when they edited out all the violent slapstick from the Warner Brothers cartoons. I thought it was stupid and pointless.

Even as a kid watching the original (and still the best) Adam West Batman show, I kept saying, “Christ, just put a bullet in his head and be done with it!” Of course, then there would be no way for Batman to ingeniously escape from those nefarious death traps.
